Viber

17+, Free, Social Media, Utility

At Good4Kids.com.au we rated this app ★★★☆☆

Overview
Viber replicates the native functionality of modern phones, giving you access to sending voice, photo, video, and text messages over a data connection instead of cellular. It also enables you to share your physical location and doodles (Of the drawing kind).

Audio quality is comparable to a normal mobile phone call and we weren’t able to fault the function of the app.
The app is free, and like their motto “Set your calls free”…so is everything about Viber.
When you create a Viber account on your device it requires you to enter in your phone number which is validated by a code sent in an SMS. The app uses your contacts list to display a list of people who are using Viber.
This app has an age restriction of 4+ which is a lot lower than most other messenger apps.

Its free…completely free!
We found it incredibly easy to setup and use this app, it really was as simple as entering a phone number, entering an sms verification code, allowing a quick import of our contacts and we were ‘vibing’.
Thankfully we have had no issues with unsolicited messages using this app.
This app works on so many platforms, including iPods and iPads. Unlike other messaging apps that require an iPhone these will work on an iPod connected to a WiFi network.
The messaging function has some cool stamps and emoticons that can be used to complement your message.
This app operates just like your normal phone function, so its dependant on knowing someones phone number rather than a username. To us this makes the app more secure that other apps like Kik. There is a little less of the social network feel to this and more of the good old phone feel.
negative hand Viber Dad DisLikes
The age rating of 4+ seemed really low for WhatsApp and this app follows suit. Viber gives you more functionality than WhatsApp and it works on iPods and iPads which could be of a concern. Note: To get it to work on an iPod/iPad you still need to use a phone number to obtain the SMS code which you enter into the iPod/iPad.
The app is fantastic…but there is potential for children to be exposed to ‘all things’ with such open communications. Does your child need their phone for emergencies or do they need is to be a social butterfly? Get this if its for the latter.
box tip Viber Dad Tips
With the age category being surprisingly low, there isn’t a lot you can do to lock down access to this app.
Those on a low data plan should keep an eye on their data usage.
